Snowfall Accumulations

As indicated, some of the highest elevations on the Virginia border saw well over a foot of snow and there were large differences between valleys and ridges across the area.  Case-in-point, the National Weather Service Office in Jackson recorded 13.9" of snow between Friday and Sunday morning, while in the town of Jackson, only 4 to 5 inches was recorded.  Only 4 miles seperates the two locations but NWS Jackson sits at an elevation of 1350 ft. while the town of Jackson is at around 700 feet above sea level.  Below are some pictures from the office.

Many reports of downed trees were received with numerous power outages from the very heavy and wet snow. Also, numerous accidents were reported with the snow overnight and many roads were closed due to the conditions.

The following is a list of all preliminary snowfall reports received by the National Weather Service office in Jackson as of 11:30 AM Saturday December 19th, 2009.
