...VERY DRY JUNE ACROSS EASTERN KENTUCKY...

A COUPLE OF BIG STORIES HAPPENED IN JUNE 2012 ACROSS EASTERN
KENTUCKY...EXTREMELY DRY CONDITIONS CONTINUED TO PLAGUE THE
REGION...AND THE OCCURRENCE OF ALL TIME RECORD HEAT TO END JUNE.
THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE FINISHED LAST MONTH OVER TWO AND THREE
QUARTERS OF AN INCH BELOW NORMAL...BUT THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT
ONLY SAW A LITTLE OVER A THIRD OF AN INCH OF PRECIPITATION...MAKING
THEM OVER FOUR INCHES DRIER THAN NORMAL. IN FACT...JUNE 2012 WAS THE
DRIEST JUNE AT LONDON...AND THE THIRD ALL TIME DRIEST MONTH.
ALSO...LAST MONTH WAS JACKSON/S SECOND DRIEST JUNE. ON THE
TEMPERATURE SIDE OF THE FENCE...A COOL BEGINNING TO JUNE KEPT THE
MONTHLY AVERAGE PRETTY CLOSE TO NORMAL. JACKSON ENDED UP OVER A HALF
A DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL...AND LONDON WAS A HALF A DEGREE BELOW NORMAL.
JUNE 2012 WENT OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY WITH TRIPLE DIGIT
TEMPERATURES. JACKSON HIT 100 DEGREES OR ABOVE OVER THE LAST THREE
DAYS OF THE MONTH...INCLUDING THE ALL TIME HIGH OF 104 DEGREES ON
THE 29TH. OF FURTHER INTEREST...JACKSON HAS ONLY SEEN TRIPLE DIGITS
FOUR TIMES BEFORE THIS...THE HIGHEST BEING 101 DEGREES. AT
LONDON...THE 29TH AND 30TH SAW HIGHS OF 105 DEGREES AND 104 DEGREES
RESPECTIVELY. BEFORE THE 29TH...THE ALL-TIME HIGH AT LONDON WAS 102
DEGREES. SURPRISINGLY...INCLUDING THE TWO TIMES FROM LAST
MONTH...LONDON HAS ONLY HAD TEMPERATURES OF 100 DEGREES OR ABOVE TEN
TIMES SINCE 1954.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON FINISHED JUNE 2012
WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 72.7 DEGREES...WHICH IS 0.7 DEGREES
ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 72.0 DEGREES. LAST MONTH WAS THE EIGHTH MONTH IN
A ROW TO FINISH WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE AVERAGE DAILY
HIGH WAS 84.4 DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 61.1 DEGREES.
THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR JUNE 2012 WAS 104 DEGREES...WHICH
OCCURRED ON THE 29TH. THIS READING WAS THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE
EVER...BREAKING DAILY...MONTHLY...SEASONAL AND ALL TIME RECORDS. THE
PREVIOUS ALL TIME HIGH WAS 101 DEGREES THAT WAS HIT THREE
TIMES...ONCE IN JULY...AND TWICE IN AUGUST OF 1988. OTHER DAILY
MAXIMUM RECORDS WERE SET ON THE 28TH WITH 100 DEGREES AND 103
DEGREES ON THE 30TH. BEFORE LATE JUNE...JACKSON HAS ONLY REACHED THE
CENTURY MARK FOUR TIMES. NOT SURPRISINGLY...THE 28TH THROUGH THE
30TH IS THE LONGEST STREAK OF 100 DEGREE DAYS. THE LOWEST
TEMPERATURE FROM JUNE 2012 WAS 48 DEGREES ON THE 2ND. BEFORE THE
HEAT KICKED IN...A LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS ESTABLISHED ON THE
26TH WITH A 54 DEGREE READING. ADDITIONALLY...A LOW OF 54 DEGREES ON
THE 27TH TIED THE RECORD FOR THAT DAY. ALSO...A MAXIMUM LOW
TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS SET ON THE 29TH WITH A LOW OF 73 DEGREES.

THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE RECEIVED 1.91 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
JUNE 2012...WHICH IS 2.79 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. LAST MONTH WAS THE

THUNDER WAS HEARD TWO DAYS AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE...WHICH IS
WELL BELOW THE NORMAL OF 9.4 DAYS FOR JUNE. THERE WERE 7 DAYS WITH
FOG...1 OF WHICH FEATURED DENSE FOG. JUNE NORMALLY AVERAGES 7.5 DAYS
OF DENSE FOG. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR JUNE WAS 1.5 MPH...AND THE
HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 37 MPH WAS RECORDED ON JUNE 29TH. THE MEAN WIND
SPEED FOR JUNE IS TYPICALLY 4.5 MPH.
