Widespread Damaging Winds across East Kentucky on July 5th including Winds Up to 100 mph at Camp Nathaniel in Knott County

A complex of thunderstorms developed over eastern Kentucky during the afternoon hours of July 5th.  The main impact from these storms was damaging winds as they dropped southward between 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm EDT.

There were numerous instances of wind damage reported to the National Weather Service in Jackson.  Some of the strongest winds occurred in western Knott County, where a NWS Storm Damage Survey Team found damage associated with downburst winds of 80 to 100 mph affected Camp Nathaniel near the Emmalena Community.  Based on radar, the downburst occurred at around 3:06 pm EDT.  Numerous large diameter trees were snapped or uprooted and were laying in a northwest to southeast direction. One large uprooted tree fell onto a building owned by the camp and other buildings received minor damage.

The following damage photos were taken at the camp on July 6th (click on each image to enlarge).  A kmz file documenting the damage is also available for Google Earth users.
