JANUARY 2013 SAW WARM AND VERY WET CONDITIONS ACROSS EASTERN
KENTUCKY. THANKS TO RECORD BREAKING RAINFALL ON THE 30TH...JACKSON
AND LONDON FINISHED LAST MONTH MUCH WETTER THAN NORMAL. THE JACKSON
WEATHER OFFICE WAS OVER TWO INCHES ABOVE NORMAL...WHILE THE LONDON
CORBIN AIRPORT WAS NEARLY ONE AND THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH WETTER.
IN FACT...IT WAS THE FIFTH WETTEST JANUARY AT JACKSON...AND 11TH
WETTEST AT LONDON. ON THE TEMPERATURE SIDE OF THE HOUSE...THE
JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE ENDED JANUARY OVER TWO AND A HALF DEGREES
ABOVE NORMAL...WHILE THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT WAS A DEGREE AND A
HALF WARMER. ALTHOUGH JACKSON DID NOT SEE JANUARY 2013 FINISH AS THE
TOP TEN WARMEST JANUARIES...IT WAS VERY CLOSE...FINISHING TIED FOR
11TH. LONDON WAS A LITTLE FARTHER BACK...AS LAST MONTH ENDED UP AS
THE 16TH WARMEST JANUARY. ALSO OF NOTE...IF NOT FOR THE ALMOST INCH
OF SNOW ON THE 31ST...THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE WOULD HAVE FINISHED
AS THE SECOND LEAST SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON FINISHED JANUARY
2013 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 37.5 DEGREES...WHICH IS 2.6
DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 34.9 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS
44.9 DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 30.0 DEGREES. THE
HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR JANUARY 2013 WAS 69 DEGREES...WHICH OCCURRED
ON THE 29TH. A DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD OF 65 DEGREES WAS
ESTABLISHED ON THE 11TH. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE FROM LAST MONTH WAS
10 DEGREES ON THE 30TH. NO LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED
LAST MONTH...BUT IT HAS BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE THE TEMPERATURE HAS
DIPPED INTO SINGLE DIGITS...8 DEGREES ON JANUARY 22ND 2010. ALSO OF
INTEREST...ONE DAILY MAXIMUM LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS SET LAST
MONTH...56 DEGREES ON THE 11TH.

THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE RECEIVED 5.73 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
JANUARY 2013...WHICH IS 2.12 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. LAST MONTH WAS THE
FIFTH WETTEST JANUARY ON RECORD AT JACKSON. ALSO OF NOTE...DECEMBER
2012 AND JANUARY 2013 TOTALED 12.12 INCHES. THIS IS THE THIRD
GREATEST DECEMBER THROUGH JANUARY TOTAL ON RECORD AT JACKSON. THERE
WERE 15 DAYS WHEN A HUNDREDTH OF AN INCH OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION
WAS RECORDED...AND 12 DAYS WHEN A TENTH OF AN INCH OR MORE FELL.
THERE WERE FOUR DAYS WHEN AT LEAST A HALF AN INCH OF RAIN WAS
RECEIVED...AND ONE DAY WITH MORE THAN ONE INCH. THE DAY OF THE 30TH
NETTED 1.79 INCHES OF RAIN WHICH WAS THE GREATEST DAILY AMOUNT FOR
JANUARY...AND ALSO SET A DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORD SET LAST MONTH.
ADDITIONAL DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET ON THE 13TH...WITH
0.85 INCHES...AND ON THE 16TH...WITH 0.76 INCHES. THE GREATEST
AMOUNT OF RAINFALL RECEIVED IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD WAS 1.82 INCHES FROM
THE 30TH THROUGH THE 31ST. JACKSON ALSO RECEIVED 1.1 INCHES OF
SNOWFALL LAST MONTH...WHICH IS 6.0 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE SEASONAL
SNOWFALL TOTAL IS NOW 4.0 INCHES...WHICH IS 8.6 INCHES BELOW NORMAL
FOR THE SEASON. THE 1.1 INCHES MADE JANUARY 2013 THE FIFTH LEAST
SNOWIEST JANUARY. ADDITIONALLY...THE 4.0 INCH SEASON TOTAL THROUGH
THE END OF JANUARY TIED THE 2006 2007 SNOW SEASON AS THE FIFTH LEAST
SNOWIEST. SURPRISINGLY...THERE WAS ONE DAILY SNOWFALL RECORD LAST
MONTH. THE 0.9 INCHES OF SNOW THAT FELL ON THE 31ST WAS THE MOST
SNOWFALL RECEIVED IN A DAY LAST MONTH AS WELL AS THE RECORD SETTER.

THUNDER WAS NOT HEARD AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE...WHICH IS BELOW
THE NORMAL OF 0.6 DAYS FOR JANUARY. THERE WERE 19 DAYS WITH
FOG...SEVEN OF WHICH FEATURED DENSE FOG. JANUARY NORMALLY AVERAGES
4.2 DAYS OF DENSE FOG. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR JANUARY WAS 3.8
MPH...AND THE HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 46 MPH WAS RECORDED ON JANUARY
30TH. THE MEAN WIND SPEED FOR JANUARY IS TYPICALLY 6.5 MPH.
ALSO...ICE PELLETS WAS BOTH NOTED THREE DAYS LAST MONTH...AND GLAZE
WAS REPORTED ON FOUR DAYS.
