THE END OF AUGUST MARKS THE CLOSE OF METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER. VERY WET
AND COOL CONDITIONS WERE EXPERIENCED OVER THE SUMMER THROUGHOUT THE
COAL FIELDS. THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE FINISHED WITH A TOTAL OF
23.02 INCHES...WHICH IS NEARLY TEN INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 13.04
INCHES. IN FACT...SUMMER 2013 WAS THE WETTEST SUMMER AS WELL AS THE
WETTEST SEASON EVER AT JACKSON. THE PREVIOUS WETTEST SEASON WAS
21.63 INCHES IN SPRING OF 2011...AND THE FORMER WETTEST SUMMER WAS
19.17 INCHES DURING SUMMER 1985. THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT WAS VERY
WET AS WELL WITH A TOTAL OF 18.03 INCHES...ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 12.15
INCHES. SUMMER OF 2013 WAS THE THIRD WETTEST SUMMER EVER AT LONDON.
ON THE TEMPERATURE SIDE OF THE FENCE...COOL CONDITIONS WERE NOTED AT
BOTH JACKSON AND LONDON. THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE HAD AN AVERAGE
OF 72.8 DEGREES...WHICH IS 1.2 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL SUMMER
TEMPERATURE OF 74.0 DEGREES. SUMMER 2013 WAS THE EIGHTH COOLEST
SUMMER ON RECORD AT JACKSON. THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT FINISHED
JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST WITH A AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 73.4
DEGREES...WHICH IS 1.4 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 74.8 DEGREES.

AUGUST 2013 SAW VARYING DEGREES OF PRECIPITATION TOTALS ACROSS
EASTERN KENTUCKY. THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE WAS OVER SIX AND A
THIRD INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. IN FACT...IT WAS THE WETTEST AUGUST ON
RECORD AT JACKSON...AND THE FIFTH WETTEST MONTH EVER. IT WAS A
DIFFERENT STORY AT LONDON...WHICH FINISHED A LITTLE OVER A TENTH OF
AN INCH BELOW NORMAL. COOL CONDITIONS WERE EXPERIENCED ACROSS ALL OF
THE COAL FIELDS DURING AUGUST. JACKSON WAS NEARLY TWO DEGREES BELOW
NORMAL...AND IT WAS THE SIXTH COOLEST AUGUST ON RECORD. LONDON WAS A
LITTLE OVER ONE DEGREE COOLER.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON FINISHED AUGUST
2013 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 72.7 DEGREES...WHICH IS 1.8
DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 74.5 DEGREES. AUGUST 2013 WAS THE SIXTH
COOLEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS 81.0
DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 64.4 DEGREES. THE HIGHEST
TEMPERATURE FOR AUGUST 2013 WAS 88 DEGREES...AND OCCURRED ON THE
28TH. NO HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED LAST MONTH. THE
LOWEST TEMPERATURE FROM AUGUST 2013 WAS 52 DEGREES ON THE
15TH...WHICH SET A LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR THAT DATE. ALSO...57
DEGREES TIED THE RECORD LOW FOR 16TH. THERE WAS ONE MINIMUM HIGH
TEMPERATURE RECORD LAST MONTH...72 DEGREES ON THE 29TH.

THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE RECEIVED 10.04 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
AUGUST 2013...WHICH IS 6.35 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. LAST MONTH WAS THE
WETTEST AUGUST AT JACKSON...EASILY SURPASSING THE OLD RECORD OF 7.70
INCHES FROM 1993. 10.04 INCHES WAS ALSO THE FIFTH WETTEST MONTH.
ALSO OF NOTE...THE 23.02 INCHES OVER JUNE...JULY  AND AUGUST 2013 IS
THE WETTEST SUMMER AT JACKSON...AS WELL AS THE WETTEST SEASON. THERE
WERE 14 DAYS WHEN A HUNDREDTH OF AN INCH OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION
WAS RECORDED...AND 11 DAYS WHEN A TENTH OF AN INCH OR MORE FELL.
THERE WERE NINE DAYS WHEN AT LEAST A HALF AN INCH OF RAIN WAS
RECEIVED...AND THREE DAYS WITH MORE THAN AN INCH. THE DAY OF THE
12TH NETTED 2.40 INCHES OF RAIN...WHICH WAS THE GREATEST DAILY
AMOUNT FOR AUGUST...AS WELL AS A DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORD FOR THAT
DAY. ANOTHER DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORD WAS ESTABLISHED ON THE 10TH
WITH 0.76 INCHES...AND ON THE 31ST WITH 0.86 INCHES. THE GREATEST
AMOUNT OF RAINFALL RECEIVED IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD WAS 3.55 INCHES FROM
THE 12TH THROUGH THE 13TH. THE ANNUAL PRECIPITATION TOTAL THROUGH
THE END OF AUGUST IS 43.22 INCHES...WHICH IS 9.67 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL FOR THE YEAR. THIS AMOUNT IS THE SECOND GREATEST JANUARY
THROUGH AUGUST TOTAL AT JACKSON...ONLY BEHIND 50.07 INCHES FROM
JANUARY TO AUGUST OF 1994.

THUNDER WAS HEARD TEN DAYS AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE...WHICH IS
ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 7.3 DAYS FOR AUGUST. THERE WERE 23 DAYS WITH
FOG...15 OF WHICH FEATURED DENSE FOG. AUGUST NORMALLY AVERAGES 7.8
DAYS OF DENSE FOG. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR AUGUST WAS 0.9
MPH...AND THE HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 43 MPH WAS RECORDED ON AUGUST
21ST. THE MEAN WIND SPEED FOR AUGUST IS TYPICALLY 3.7 MPH.

INCH OR MORE OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. LONDON HAD ONE DAY WITH AT LEAST
A HALF AN INCH...AND ONE DAY WITH MORE THAN AN INCH. THE GREATEST
DAILY AMOUNT WAS 1.12 INCHES ON THE 13TH. THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF
PRECIPITATION RECEIVED IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD WAS 1.41 INCHES FROM THE
12TH THROUGH THE 13TH. NO PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED AT

MPH RECORDED ON THE 31ST.
