The East Kentucky Growing Season has Ended

Most locations saw the mercury bottom out in the lower and middle 20s Saturday morning. The Lewis County Mesonet station had a low of 21 degrees for the coldest spot in eastern Kentucky. A few coop sites in the Coal Fields saw a low of 22 degrees including Island City, Sandy Hook and West Liberty. On top of Sugar Camp Mountain, the Jackson Weather Office dipped down to 29 degrees, setting a record low for today. Normal lows for late October are in the lower to middle 40s.

The next couple of nights will see cold temperatures, but not as chilly as this morning. The mercury will return to more seasonable readings toward the middle of the week.

The freezing temperatures from Friday morning, combined with the hard freeze Saturday morning, has ended the growing season. No more frost or freeze headline products will be issued this year. Product headlines will return in the spring when the growing season starts once again.
