Strong Winds and Bitter Wind Chills

A strong low pressure system moved across the northern plains Saturday and Sunday December 8th and 9th.  This system brought heavy snow to parts of South Dakota and lighter snow amounts to northern Nebraska.  The main impact of this winter system to western and north central Nebraska was bitter cold wind chills and and strong winds as the first push of arctic air for the season was pulled into the south into the region.  Temperatures dropped into the single digits and teens by Sunday morning.  Strong winds were also observed in the wake of this system, as winds blowing at 30 mph to 50 mph were common across the much of Nebraska.  The combination of the cold temperatures and strong winds dropped wind chills down below zero in many locations.  Below are listings of the lowest observed wind chills and strongest observed wind speeds as of mid morning Sunday.
