 July in southern Indiana and central Kentucky is known for its heat and humidity.  However, relatively cool air can occasionally sweep over the region, as we will be seeing this week with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.  Below, check out some times when we really got a respite from mid-summer heat:

Number of days on which the daily average temperature was at least 10° colder than normal:
Louisville:  9
Lexington:  7
Bowling Green:  9
Frankfort:  4

The chilly weather peaked on the 22nd-23rd when average daily temperatures were 12° to 16° colder than normal.  Below is a weather map from 1:30am on the 23rd.  Note the sprawling high pressure centered over the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Across the country, there were only six tornadoes of F2 or greater strength in July 1947.  The average number of tornadoes in July (of all strengths) is 134.
