2009 was a busy and productive year for the folks at the Kentucky Climate Center. Twenty-five new sites came on line during 2009, bringing the total number of operational sites to 45. Kentucky State Climatologist Stuart Foster aims to add at least 20 new sites to the network by the end of August 2010. The four newest sites in the network are near Cadiz in Trigg County; Albany in Clinton County; Burlington in Boone County; and Hindman in Knott County.
Data provided by the Kentucky Mesonet have numerous applications for individual, business, and government users. The National Weather Services uses mesonet data in forecast and warning operations. As we accumulate mesonet data over the years, it will become a valuable climate resource. Thanks to Dr. Foster and everyone at the Kentucky Climate Center for their hard work on the Kentucky Mesonet.
