Severe Storms Roll Through The Ohio and Tennessee Valleys

A powerful cold front moved through the area late Wednesday as an area of low pressure moved just north of the Ohio River. Ahead of this front, the stage was set for several strong to severe thunderstorms across southern Indiana and central Kentucky through the day on Wednesday. Over 25 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in the area for large hail and damaging winds. Below you will find a map of the peak wind gusts for Wednesday (some of the gusts are from thunderstorms and some were measured with frontal passage).

The wind gusts were measured by ASOS, AWOS, and Kentucky Mesonet stations.

Reports map from March 23, 2011
This map shows the locations from which we received reports of hail or high winds.  The purple and white icons are hail reports, and the brown icons with the picture of the tree are wind reports.  The pink outlines are where Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued.  Not all hail reports shown here necessarily met warning criteria (1" in diameter).

Above is a map of the hail and wind damage reports received across the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians by the Storm Prediction Center.
