Preliminary April 2011 Tornado Count

So far we have counted 37 tornadoes in the Louisville NWS office's area of responsibility in southern Indiana and central Kentucky in April 2011.  That is more tornadoes than we have ever recorded in an entire year before.  The old annual record was 30 in 2008 (we've had 44 so far in 2011), and the old April record was 21 in 1974.

We had 23 tornadoes during the April 19-20 oubreak, which sets a new record for the number of tornadoes from one event for our area.  The old record was 21 tornadoes on April 3, 1974, although the '74 outbreak was BY FAR much more prolific as far as magnitude, damage and impact are concerned.

Further information on these tornadoes will be posted on our web site in the coming days.
