Over the past several days, widespread fires across the mountains of eastern Arizona spread toward New Mexico. These fires have become some of the worst ever experienced by the state. The picture below is a satellite image of smoke that has spread downstream from these blazes. The westernmost area highlighted by one of two circles shows the location of two main blazes and the smoke moving downstream to the northeast. The second easternmost circle shows where smoke has spread across Missouri and Oklahoma. Despite clear skies, some residents of these two states may have noticed the dusky yellowish-orange tinge of both the sky and the sun late Wednesday afternoon.
