Satellite picture of early morning thunderstorms April 26

Several large clusters of showers and thunderstorms, called "Mesoscale Convective Systems" or "MCS" in meteorology, moved from west to east from the Mississippi Valley to the Appalachians during the pre-dawn hours of April 26, 2012.  It is unusual to see this many MCS's moving through the region at the same time.  The MCS labeled "#1" developed over the southeast corner of Iowa and held together all the way to the Carolinas, giving south central Kentucky scattered hail and gusty winds as it passed through between 3am and 5am CDT.
