December started off with a burst of amazing warmth as temperatures soared into the 70s on the 3rd. Louisville hit their second warmest temperature ever recorded in the month of December (75). Happily, the unusual warmth came without any severe weather.
We did have one stormy day during the month, though. On the 17th a cold front sparked showers and a few thunderstorms that managed to produce hail. Most of the hail was quite small, but there was one report of half dollar sized hailstones in Bullitt County.
During the final week and a half of the month we entered an active weather pattern with several storm systems passing through the region. On the 20th winds gusted to as much as 60 mph as a strong center of low pressure moved by to the north. Several days later, on the 26th, a powerful blizzard charged from Arkansas to New England, grazing southern Indiana where 4 to 8 inches of snowfall was propelled by 50 mph winds! There was even some thundersnow in Dubois County. On the heels of the blizzard another snowmaker came through on the 29th and dropped up to half a foot of new powder on southern Indiana and northern Kentucky.
