Emergency response meteorologists with the NWS New Orleans/Baton Rouge forecast office, located in Slidell, Louisiana, visited the NWS Louisville forecast office Thursday August 1. They gave a presentation on the importance of on-site weather support for highly populated, large venue events. They also demonstrated the capabilities of their Significant Weather Emergency Response Vehicle, or SWERV, which is all part of a pilot project associated with the Weather-Ready Nation campaign. The SWERV was constructed via local public-private partnerships. Emergency response meteorologists deployed the SWERV at emergency operations centers for such events as the NCAA Final Four, the War of 1812 Bicentennial / Navy Week festivities, to support community response to river flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac, and, most recently, to support activities associated with the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.
