Wet Microbursts 8/31/13

Two Wet Microbursts Confirmed in Oldham County

Time: 3:45 PM EDT
Wind Speed: 60 - 75 MPH

The survey team found evidence of two microbursts; one near Buckner, the other between Buckner and La Grange.  Most of the damage was along KY 146 from just northeast of the I-71 interchange.  The winds from the Buckner microburst were estimated to be between 70 and 75 mph.  The winds knocked down numerous trees, large limbs, power poles, electrical lines, and caused some roof damage to barns and homes.  Dozens of telephone poles were snapped along the railroad parallel to KY 146.

Witnesses reported a pressure drop during torrential downpours and winds.  Several unofficial rain gauges measured five inches of rain, with over two inches between 3:30pm and 4:30pm.  They described the winds and rain as being so intense that they could not hear each other talk in their homes.  The damage was spread over a 2.5 square mile area.

The second microburst was weaker with winds estimated to be between 60 and 65mph.  These winds caused sporadic damage to trees and snapped power poles from just east of Buckner to just west of La Grange's downtown.

Wet Microburst in Jefferson County, Indiana

Time:  4:40-4:50pm EDT
Wind speed:  55 mph

A microburst formed just southeast of Madison Municipal Airport.  The strong winds caused sporadic damage to trees, power lines, and there was some minor roof damage.  The strangest thing was what happened to two car tires leaning up against the back of a residence's exterior wall.  The tires were next to one another.  One never moved, but the other was lifted up over the house and flew 100 yards to the northeast.

The National Weather Service is grateful to Jefferson County Emergency Management for their assistance with this storm damage assessment.
