2014 Student Career Workshop

Student Attendees and NWS Staff at the 2014 Student Career Workshop

On Thursday the 29th of May 2014, the Chicago office of the National Weather Service hosted its second annual career development workshop for college students majoring in meteorology and related fields.  While there are many ways for students to get internship experience working or volunteering in the NWS before graduation, it is not possible for the NWS to provide an opportunity to every student seeking an internship.  This half-day workshop was created as another way to offer at least some exposure to the NWS and the field of operational meteorology, as well as to give tips and feedback regarding resumes and the process of applying for jobs.

Workshop attendees included students presently working or volunteering at NWS Chicago, as well as students who simply took the initiative to apply for a volunteer position this year, even if they could not be offered a formal internship at this time.  In all, there were 15 students in attendance, representing the following seven universities:

  • Cornell
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Missouri
  • Northern Illinois
  • Texas A&M
  • Valparaiso
  • Western Illinois

We thank the students for attending!  We hope they enjoyed hearing what we had to say, because we certainly enjoyed spending time with them and getting to know them better!
