NWS Doppler Radar Improved Scanning Strategy

SAILS

Last month our WSR-88D was upgraded with the addition of SAILS, or the Supplemental Adaptive Intra-Volume Low-Level Scan, which inserts a second 0.5° scan within the middle of each volume scan. This upgrade will allow meteorologists to detect developments and changes in thunderstorms and other meteorological phenomena sooner and possibly see spin-up tornadoes that may have otherwise occurred undetected in-between scans.

To view the radar data with SAILS, visit the NWS Ridge 2 radar site.  Note, SAILS is used only when the radar is in storm mode.
