Fire in Harvey Illinois seen on National Weather Service Radar

An extra alarm fire was burning this afternoon in abandoned warehouse in south suburban Harvey. The fire has spread to several adjacent buildings. This picture shows the reflectivity image the smoke plume from the fire. Particles of smoke and and small debris provide objects for the radar beam to reflect on. This is the same process the radar "sees" rain drops.
