PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL
832 PM CDT SUN JUL 8 2007

...SEASONABLY HOT AND HUMID WEATHER SUNDAY AFTERNOON...

IT WAS A HOT AND RATHER HUMID AFTERNOON SUNDAY ACROSS NORTHERN
ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA. WHILE SOUTHWEST WINDS WERE
GUSTY...THEY DID LITTLE TO OFFER RELIEF FROM THE HEAT. IN
FACT...THE SOUTHWEST WINDS ACTUALLY DASHED ANY HOPES OF A LAKE
BREEZE FOR THOSE HOPING FOR SOME COOLER WEATHER. HERE ARE SOME OF
THE PEAK (BASED ON HOURLY READINGS ONLY) HEAT INDICES AT VARIOUS
REPORTING STATIONS FROM ACROSS THE AREA...

NORTHERLY ISLAND....105
GARY................103
STERLING............101
WEST CHICAGO........101
ROCKFORD............100
WAUKEGAN............100
KANKAKEE............99
NORTH CHICAGO.......99
MIDWAY..............98
O`HARE..............98
AURORA..............97
JOLIET..............97
LOCKPORT............96
LASALLE/PERU........96
PONTIAC.............96
MORRIS..............96
DEKALB..............95
VALPARAISO..........95
ROCHELLE............92

BASED ON THESE OBSERVATIONS IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE WORST OF THE
HEAT WAS IN THE CITY...WHERE THE ABUNDANCE OF CONCRETE AND
BUILDINGS LEAD TO MORE HEAT BEING RETAINED...PARTICULARLY AT
NIGHT. THE LOW TEMPERATURE AT NORTHERLY ISLAND LAST NIGHT ONLY
DIPPED TO A VERY BALMY 80 DEGREES WITH HEAT INDICES ONLY BOTTOMING
OUT IN THE MID 80S FOR A FEW HOURS BEFORE SUNRISE.

IT WILL BE ANOTHER MUGGY NIGHT TONIGHT WITH LOWS DOWNTOWN AGAIN
EXPECTED TO HOLD IN THE LOWER 80S...WITH HEAT INDICES IN THE MID
TO UPPER 80S MOST OF THE NIGHT. RELIEF IS ON THE WAY TOMORROW AS
WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO COME OFF THE LAKE DURING THE AFTERNOON
MONDAY AS A COLD FRONT SLOWLY APPROACHES THE AREA.

WHILE IT WAS HOT ON SUNDAY...NO RECORDS WERE THREATENED AS
TEMPERATURES WERE ONLY ABOUT 10 DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE AND STILL
WELL SHY OF THE RECORDS. OHARE`S HIGH TEMPERATURE SUNDAY AFTERNOON
WAS 94 DEGREES...WHICH FELL 5 DEGREES SHY OF THEIR RECORD HIGH OF
99 SET BACK 1955. AT ROCKFORD THE HIGH TEMPERATURE TODAY WAS 93
DEGREES WHICH WAS WELL SHY OF THEIR RECORD HIGH OF 104 DEGREES SET
BACK IN 1936.

TODAYS 94 DEGREE HIGH TEMPERATURE AT OHARE DOES MAKE TODAY THE
HOTTEST DAY SO FAR THIS SUMMER. THE LAST TIME THE TEMPERATURE GOT
THIS HOT IN CHICAGO WAS BACK ON AUGUST 2ND 2006 WHEN IT WAS 97
DEGREES AT OHARE.
