Is Weather Really Causing Potholes?

The weather over the past week has been ideal for potholes to form. The diagram below from the Virginia Department of Transportation shows that potholes tend to form when moisture seeps into cracks in the pavement, freezes, then thaws. The recent bouts of wet weather, followed quickly by bitter cold temperatures, then more warm wet weather creates ideal conditions for potholes. So once again this year, it looks like commuters across the region will not only have to dodge other cars, but may also have to dodge potholes!
