Accumulating snow is possible over northern Illinois this weekend. While heavy snowfall in Spring is uncommon over northern Illinois, it does occur from time to time. Here is a list of big Spring snowstorms for Chicago and Rockford.

March 25-26, 1970...14.3 inches (ninth biggest snow in Chicago history)
April 1-2, 1970...........10.7 inches
 
Normal snowfall in Chicago in March and April is 7.6 inches, or about 20 percent of the normal seasonal snowfall of 38 inches. Chicago snowfall records date back to 1884.
 
Rockford
March 30-31, 1926...16.0 inches (second biggest snow in Rockford history)
March 21-22, 1932...15.0 inches (third biggest snow in Rockford history)
March 29, 1972.........10.4 inches
 
Normal snowfall in Rockford in March and April is 7.0 inches, or about 18 percent of the normal seasonal snowfall of 38.8 inches.  Rockford snowfall records date back to 1906.
