Summer-like Warmth Not Over Yet??

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL
947 AM CDT SAT OCT 2 2010 /1047 AM EDT SAT OCT 2 2010/

...AS COLDEST AIR MASS OF THE SEASON ARRIVES NOT ALL HOPE IS LOST
FOR WARMTH...

AS CHICAGOANS DIG THROUGH THEIR CLOSETS AND ATTICS TO GET THEIR
COATS AND FAVORITE SWEATERS OUT OF STORAGE THIS WEEKEND...ITS
PROBABLY WORTH A REMINDER THAT IT IS STILL A BIT PREMATURE TO
PACK THE SHORTS AND TEE SHIRTS AWAY. AS LOW TEMPERATURES PLUMMET
INTO THE 30S THIS WEEKEND IN MANY AREAS ITS HARD TO IMAGINE THAT
WE WILL SEE ANYMORE SUMMER LIKE WEATHER...HOWEVER CLIMATOLOGICALLY
SPEAKING WE STILL STAND A GOOD CHANCE OF SEEING WARM WEATHER
BEFORE OLD MAN WINTER TIGHTENS HIS STRANGLE HOLD ON THE AREA.

LOOKING BACK AT THE RECORD BOOKS FOR CHICAGO AND ROCKFORD IT IS
VERY LIKELY THAT THE TEMPERATURES WILL HIT 75 AGAIN AT LEAST A
COUPLE MORE TIMES AND THERE IS EVEN A REASONABLY HIGH PROBABILITY
OF TEMPERATURES CRACKING 80 AGAIN AS WELL!

IN CHICAGO...93 PERCENT OF OCTOBERS HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE DAY WITH
A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF AT LEAST 75 DEGREES AND SOMEWHAT
SURPRISINGLY 65 PERCENT OF OCTOBERS HAVE AT LEAST ONE DAY IN THE
80S! ON AVERAGE...THE HIGH TEMPERATURE REACHES AT LEAST 75 DEGREES
ABOUT 5 TIMES IN OCTOBER AND REACHES 80 TWICE. THE GREATEST NUMBER
OF DAYS IN THE 80S IN OCTOBER WAS 13 BACK IN 1963 WHEN THERE WERE
17 DAYS AT OR ABOVE 75 DEGREES.

IN ROCKFORD...91 PERCENT OF OCTOBERS HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE DAY
WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 75 DEGREES AND 72 PERCENT HAVE HAD AT
LEAST ONE 80 DEGREE DAY! LIKE CHICAGO...ROCKFORD ALSO AVERAGES 2
DAYS IN THE 80S AND 5 DAYS AT OR ABOVE 75 DEGREES IN OCTOBER.

WHILE CLIMATOLOGY CERTAINLY DOES NOT GUARANTEE WARMTH...THE ODDS
ARE IN FAVOR OF THERE BEING AT LEAST A FEW MORE SUMMERISH DAYS
BEFORE ALL HOPE OF REAL WARMTH IS LOST UNTIL SPRING. LA NINA
AUTUMNS TEND TO BE WARMER THAN AVERAGE IN THE MIDWEST...WHICH IS
LIKELY ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THE 30 DAYS OUTLOOK FROM THE CLIMATE
PREDICTION CENTER IS CALLING FOR HIGHER PROBABILITY OF ABOVE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FOR OCTOBER. THE 6 TO 10 DAY OUTLOOK IS ALSO
CALLING FOR ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEKEND HEADING INTO
EARLY THE FOLLOWING WEEK.
