EF2 Tornado confirmed at Caledonia (Updated at 720 PM)

Nov 22nd - Confirmed Tornado

The National Weather Service office in Chicago has confirmed that an EF2 tornado occurred Monday afternoon near Caledonia Illinois, northeast of the city of Rockford.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Chicago surveyed the damage along the track of the tornado Tuesday afternoon. The tornado appeared to begin at 3:04 pm in far east central Winnebago county, one mile east of Rock Cut State Park and approximately one quarter mile southwest of the intersection of Argyle and Harlem Roads. A school bus was blown over by the storm near that intersection, and 6 people on board the bus received minor injuries.  The tornado then knocked down eleven electrical high tension towers just southwest of the same intersection. The tornado then continued northeast into western Boone county, and moved across largely open rural fields towards the town of Caledonia. Significant damage occured to at least six buildings in Caledonia, with approximately 20 additional buildings sustaining minor damage. Several large trees were snapped or uprooted and a grain bin was partially collapsed. The tornado then continued northeast from Caledonia, downing  several power poles, and causing damage ranging from blown off roofs to completely destroying at least three farm outbuildings. One of these buildings, located 2 miles northwest of Capron, had also been damaged during the January 2008 tornado. The tornado path, consisting mainly of sporadic tree damage at this point, then continued to a location roughly one mile west of Lawrence, where the tornado appears to have dissipated at 3:23pm. Times are approximate based on radar and eye-witness reports.

Path width: 200 yards  (varied between 50 and 200 yards)

Path length: 16.4 miles

Estimated Max winds: 135 mph

In addition to the above tornado, thunderstorm wind damage occurred near McFarland and Thomas Drive in Loves Park where shingles were blown off roofs and fascia was damaged on several houses.

Synopsis & Radar Imagery

A potent cold front passed through the area on Monday November 22nd and brought a line of severe thunderstorms to the region.  Strong southerly winds ahead of the front brought warm and humid air into the region. Temperatures flirted with or hit record highs this afternoon and dew points soared into the upper 50s and lower 60s allowing moderate instability and steep lapse rates to develop.  Strong wind shear in the atmosphere, especially in the lowest kilometer, created favorable conditions for rotating supercells and tornados.

Surface Analysis

This surface analysis shows the cold front approaching the western portions of the forecast area this afternoon. On forecast soundings, southerly flow at the surface veered to the southwest and increased in magnitude with height creating strong low level wind shear, a condition favorable for rotating thunderstorms. The loops below shows what meteorologists were viewing in real-time during the tornado that passed through Winnebago and Boone counties. The image on the left is the 0.5° base reflectivity loop and the image on the right is the 0.5° storm relative motion.
