...STRETCH OF ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES COME TO ABRUPT END...

AFTER 9 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS WITH TEMPERATURES ENDING UP ABOVE
AVERAGE...IT IS A NEAR CERTAINTY THAT THIS STREAK WILL COME TO AN
ABRUPT END THIS MONTH. THE FIRST 17 DAYS OF DECEMBER HAVE BEEN A
COLD HARSH SLAP IN THE FACE FROM MOTHER NATURE WITH TEMPERATURES
AVERAGING AROUND 9 DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE. IN FACT...THIS HAS BEEN
ONE OF THE TOP 10 COLDEST FIRST 17 DAYS OF DECEMBER ON RECORD BOTH
IN CHICAGO AND ROCKFORD.

HERE IS HOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES HAVE TALLIED UP SINCE MARCH...

        CHICAGO     ROCKFORD
MAR      +1.0         +5.2
APR      +6.8         +6.9
MAY      +3.0         +2.0
JUN      +3.0         +1.6
JUL      +4.3         +2.5
AUG      +5.0         +3.7
SEP      +1.3         +1.9
OCT      +3.9         +4.4
NOV      +2.2         +4.4
DEC*     -9.2         -8.7

* = THROUGH DECEMBER 17TH

HERE ARE THE TOP 10 COLDEST STARTS TO DECEMBER (THROUGH DEC 17TH)...

       CHICAGO       ROCKFORD
1)   15.7 (1958)    11.6 (1958)
2)   16.9 (1919)    13.7 (1972)
3)   17.4 (1942)    15.2 (1976)
4)   18.6 (1903)    15.7 (2005)
5)   18.6 (1972)    17.2 (2000)
6)   19.1 (1917)    17.5 (1989)
7)   19.4 (1893)    17.8 (1985)
8)   19.7 (2005)    17.9 (1942)
9)   20.0 (1876)    18.0 (2010)
10)  20.4 (2010)    19.6 (2008)

SUCH AN ABNORMALLY COLD START TO THE MONTH COMES AS A STARK
CONTRAST TO WHAT TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN LIKE THE PREVIOUS 9 MONTH
PERIOD (METEOROLOGICAL SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL). DURING THAT
PERIOD...72% OF DAYS IN CHICAGO FEATURED TEMPERATURES AT OR ABOVE
AVERAGE WITH A REMARKABLE 21% OF DAYS (58 DAYS) RECORDING
TEMPERATURES 10 OR MORE DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE. DURING THAT SAME
275 DAY PERIOD THERE WERE ONLY 3 (1%) DAYS IN CHICAGO WITH
TEMPERATURES 10 OR MORE DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE. IN ROCKFORD...THE
STATISTICS WERE JUST AS IMPRESSIVE WITH 76% OF DAYS AT OR ABOVE
AVERAGE AND 17% OF DAYS (48 DAYS) 10 OR MORE DEGREES ABOVE
AVERAGE. ROCKFORD ONLY SAW 4 DAYS (~1%) DURING THE 275 DAY PERIOD
WITH TEMPERATURES 10 OR MORE DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE.

THE WEATHER PATTERN HAS TAKEN ABOUT AS A DRAMATIC OF A TURN TOWARD
BELOW AVERAGE AS ONE COULD FATHOM THIS MONTH. SINCE DECEMBER BEGAN
CHICAGO AND ROCKFORD HAVE BOTH SEEN 88% OF DAYS END UP WITH BELOW
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. NOT ONLY HAVE THERE ONLY BEEN 2 DAYS WITH
ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES (AND BARELY ABOVE AVERAGE AT THAT) BUT
SO FAR THIS MONTH CHICAGO HAS SEEN 8 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES 10 OR
MORE DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE...WHILE ROCKFORD HAS SEEN 9 DAYS 10 OR
MORE DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE. SO IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS THERE HAVE
BEEN MORE THAN TWICE AS MANY DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE DOUBLE
DIGITS BELOW AVERAGE THAN OCCURRED DURING THE ENTIRE LAST 3
SEASONS COMBINED!
