Least Snowy Winter Statistics

The 2011-2012 winter is off to a remarkably slow start with regards to snowfall, in fact, both Chicago and Rockford are currently experiencing one of the least snowiest starts to winter ever! The chance of measurable snowfall through Tuesday (Jan 10th) is essentially zero, so by then, this winter will be in 3rd place for the least snowiest to date in Rockford with only 1.7" having fallen. The only winters that will have started off less snowy through Jan 10th are 1920-21 (0.2") and 2001-02 (0.5"). In Chicago, by Tuesday the seasonal snowfall will be 1.9", making it the 4th least snowiest start to winter through January 10th. The only winters in Chicago that will have started off with less snowfall through January 10th are 1889-1890 (1.3"), 1936-37 (1.4"), and 2001-02 (1.7").

Assuming Chicago does not officially pick up a half inch of measurable snowfall or more by January 16th, then the 2011-12 winter will move into first place for the lowest snowfall total to date. The chart below shows the breakdown of least snowiest winter to date snowfall totals for each day, notice that by January 16th Chicago's least snowiest winter-to-date snowfall is 2.4", putting this winter well within striking range assuming we avoid any measurable snowfall Monday the 16th, which is a possibility.
