Meteorology

After Monday brought temperatures in the mid to upper 30s to most parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, Tuesday and Wednesday saw readings 30 degrees higher across much of the area.  Such a 24-hour change such as seen from Monday to Tuesday is rare, especially a climb.  This came with strong south to southwest winds.  It was no coincidence the warmth and winds were together, as both are intertwined in the science of weather.  A few atmospheric elements came together to make the warmth and gusty stretch happen.  These were:

  • A developing low pressure system with a strong warm front racing north.
  • A completely clear sky aiding in surface heating and atmospheric mixing.
  • Extremely strong and deep warm air advection.
  • Very strong winds aloft able to be at least partially mixed down to the surface.
  • A dry low level atmosphere here and well to the south.

A look at the surface weather map from the middle of Tuesday afternoon can be seen below.  Note the low pressure over South Dakota, with a warm front having raced well north of the area.  Temperatures in the 30s and 40s are seen to the north of the front in eastern North Dakota to the U.P. of Michigan.  Do those values look familiar?  They were our temperatures on Monday, that had been ushered rapidly north by the front during the morning.  Also take note of the low dew points all the way down to Mississippi, meaning a basically negligible moisture increase through the day yesterday.

Surface Weather Map

Full sunshine aided in heating the "warm sector" of this low pressure system.  Not only was the sky clear, but sinking motion aloft helped to keep it sunny through the day Tuesday.  Meteorologists use satellite to help see clouds and their developments, as well as to indicate signs of sinking air motion.  To the right is a water vapor image from the late morning Tuesday showing the dryness from Iowa to southern IL that would move over our area during the afternoon.  This is not only dry air, but on the water vapor channel it is often a sign of sinking air likely to suppress cloud development.

The advection, or movement of air parcels, was extreme within the warm sector.  The pressure gradients drove strong winds through the lower atmosphere and this helped to further advect warm air northward.  This advection combined with the daytime heating under full sunshine helped to create the very warm temperatures and quick 24-hour change.  To help visualize the actual advection, this link will take you to an image of a backward parcel trajectory (at about ~2000 ft) from the NAM forecast model.  This is an indication of where air parcels over Chicago originated 24-hours before.  Note how the origin was east to southeast Texas, a warm place this time of year.  Such advection in just 24-hours allows little modification to that air mass, and is a way that such sharp temperature increases can happen.

Water Vapor Satellite

Warmer low-level temperatures, combined with a dry and somewhat turbulent atmosphere, will help to induce vertical mixing.  Such mixing can bring strong winds down to the surface.  Meteorologists gauge this by looking at soundings, which are data plots from instruments sent up on weather balloons.  Below are two data plots from the NWS Central Illinois Weather Forecast Office, located in Lincoln, IL.  Because the air flow was strong from the south, their observations were very representative of what was over northern Illinois and northwest Indiana Tuesday and Wednesday.

The first plot is from the balloon launch around 5 am Tuesday.  Note the incredibly strong winds within the lowest 100 mb (within 3,000 ft of the ground).  As much as 65 kt (~75 mph) is indicated.  Also note the spacing between the temperature and dew point traces.  This is an indication of a very dry atmosphere, which not only helps to prevent clouds, but further induce vertical mixing.

ILX 12Z Sounding

Below is the data plot from twelve hours later at the 5 pm weather balloon launch at NWS Lincoln on Tuesday.  This is from just after the high temperature occurred, allowing meteorologists to see how deep the atmosphere was mixed.   Note the even drier atmosphere, a sign of strong mixing and thus the ability to bring down strong winds.  The wind field remained very strong all the way into Wednesday.
