GOES Water Vapor Loop From 8 am Thursday Morning Through 8 am Friday Morning

Water Vapor Loop

This 24 hour loop reveals the immense size of this upper level low pressure which brought a huge variety of impacting weather to the central U.S., including a major snow storm to Kansas into Missouri, freezing rain to parts of the mid-Mississippi Valley and Arkansas, and even severe weather in the Deep South.  Note also on this loop the system's dry slot and its movement over our area by early overnight.  The dry slot is identified by the drier colors (yellowish) that wrap into and partially around well-organized mature weather systems. This moved rapidly into the area cutting off deep moisture and support for prolonged heavier snow. However, on this feature's leading edge is a favored area for more intense precipitation, which was partially responsible for the temporary heavy snow rates on Thursday night.

Radar

Regional radar reflectivity from Thursday night showing the moderate to heavy area of snow progressing northeast, with redeveloping snow/sleet/freezing rain showers in its wake. Behind this was the heart of the dry slot, and mainly freezing drizzle or very light snow was observed toward daybreak.

Snowfall Amounts

Here is a map of snowfall across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana for the 24 hour period ending 700 AM CST February 22, 2013. This product is an objective analysis of NWS Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) and Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) snowfall reports.  CoCoRaHS data is from non-NWS sources and may have not been fully quality controlled.
