As part of Illinois and National Severe Weather Preparedness Week, National Weather Service (NWS) offices serving Illinois (Chicago, Quad Cities, Lincoln, Paducah KY, and St. Louis) will issue TEST tornado warnings this morning at 1000 AM CST. The TEST tornado warnings will be issued like real warnings. Tone alarms and S.A.M.E. codes will go out on NOAA Weather Radio - All Hazards. Many radio and TV stations will also pass along the warnings. The tornado drill is a communications exercise to ensure tornado warnings can be disseminated and received and warning systems can be properly activated, before tornado season arrives.
The NWS encourages schools, businesses, hospitals, nursing homes and families at home to review tornado warning procedures and conduct a tornado drill.
The statewide tornado drill was scheduled for Tuesday March 5 but was postponed to today due to the winter storm. More information about Severe Weather Preparedness Week can be found here.
