Strong Storms Tracked Across the Area on Monday Evening

Thunderstorms spread north from western Illinois on Monday early evening, crossing a large part of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana during the evening and early overnight hours.  Because of sufficient deep layer shear in the atmosphere, storms organized into clusters capable of temporary strong winds.  In addition, there were individual robust storm updrafts that helped lead to hail up to quarter size.  With a moist atmosphere in place, the storms also had heavy rainfall rates, with temporary rates in excess of one inch per half hour.
