June 12th, 2013: Severe Weather Event

Overview and Science

A potent upper level disturbance interacted with a very warm and moist air mass on Wednesday afternoon and evening, and this lead to the development of severe thunderstorms. The images below are water vapor images from the weather satellite. These images indicate the amount of water vapor in the upper atmosphere. This allows us to see the strength and placement of weather disturbances in the atmosphere.  In the images below you will notice the orange colors marked with the red arrow. This is an indication of a mid-level jet streak (a band of stronger upper level winds) associated with a significant upper level disturbance. The right hand figure, taken about 30 minutes after the left image, shows rapid thunderstorm development.  The updrafts associated with the thunderstorms lift large amounts of water vapor into the upper atmosphere, which is detected here by the satellite.  Overall, the approach of this upper level disturbance dynamically induced cooler mid-level temperatures due to increased forcing for ascent. This process allowed the cap to erode and thunderstorms to rapidly develop across north central Illinois. The cap is a basically a corridor of warmer temperatures aloft which act as a lid in the atmosphere, keeping thunderstorms from developing.

Water Vapor Imagery

Satellite Water Vapor Image from 2:52 PM Wednesday Afternoon. Notice the Orange colors marked by the red arrow from the Dakotas southeastward across Iowa. This is an indication of stronger upper level winds associated with a significant upper level atmospheric disturbance.

Same as the left image, except this image was taken at 325 PM only 30 minutes later. Notice all the blue and green areas across north central Illinois and into Wisconsin.  This is showing the rapid development of thunderstorms. What this represents is a vast amount of water vapor being lifted into the upper atmosphere by the strong updrafts of the storms.

Radar

KLOT 0.5° Reflectivity: 3:35 PM KLOT 0.5° Velocity:  4:35 PM

The radar imagery here starting at 3:35 PM and running each hour through 6:30 PM shows that once thunderstorms developed, they rapidly became severe. The very unstable atmosphere combined with a good amount of wind shear (changes in wind speeds and direction with height) allowed these storms to become super cellular.  A super cell is severe thunderstorm characterized by a rotating updraft.  Super cells are typically the thunderstorms that associated with tornados.  However, they are also known for producing large hail and strong winds.  These storms prompted several warnings, including for tornados as they moved eastward towards the western suburbs of Chicago.  Survey teams will be going out today to study to some of the damage to determine if any tornados occurred.

KLOT 0.5° Reflectivity:  5:35 PM KLOT 0.5° Velocity: 6:35 PM

These radar images during the late afternoon and evening indicate that the thunderstorms began to train from west to east over the same areas. These storms produced heavy amounts of rain on the order of 1 to 2 inches per hour and this lead to flash flooding across portions of the area.

Reflectivity Loop

Reflectivity Loop

Click images for loop.  This loop depicts how several individual cells, mainly with supercell structure at first, morph into a larger complex with segments that quickly propogate forward. These are the portions of the storms where strong winds were present, which were realized at the surface in places.  Clear inflow and rotation was seen early on, which included the Shabbona area tornado.  This would keep some semblence eastward in far southern DeKalb County and then re-intensify south of Plano, where numerous wall cloud and funnel cloud reports were received.  This includes the one below.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PERSONNEL SURVEYED DAMAGE NORTHWEST OF
MANTENO ILLINOIS IN KANKAKEE COUNTY AND ACROSS NORTHWEST INDIANA.
THE SURVEY TEAM DETERMINED THAT A WEAK AND BRIEF TORNADO OCCURRED
NEAR MANTENO...WHILE STRAIGHT LINE WINDS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR
DAMAGE ELSEWHERE NEAR MANTENO AND INTO NORTHWEST INDIANA.

THE MANTENO TORNADO BRIEFLY TOUCHED DOWN AT A FARMSTEAD JUST
SOUTH OF THE INTERSECTION OF COUNTY LINE ROAD AND NORTH 1500 WEST
ROAD. AT THIS LOCATION THE TORNADO COLLAPSED A BARN KILLING A
HORSE. DEBRIS WAS TOSSED ALMOST 75 YARDS SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE ROAD
INTO THE ADJACENT FIELD. THE TORNADO WAS RATED A HIGH END EF-0 AT
THIS LOCATION WITH A PATH LENGTH OF 0.25 MILES...A WIDTH OF 50
YARDS...AND MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WINDS OF 85 MPH. AN AERIAL PHOTO
SHOWING THE TORNADO SCAR INDICATED THAT THE TORNADO QUICKLY
DISSIPATED IN THE FIELD EAST OF THE FARM.

ADDITIONAL DAMAGE ATTRIBUTED TO STRAIGHT LINE WINDS WAS FOUND
DOWNSTREAM OF THE TORNADO PATH TOWARD THE WEST SIDE OF MANTENO.
THIS INCLUDED SNAPPED TREE BRANCHES...SNAPPED POWER POLES...MINOR
ROOF DAMAGE TO A GARAGE...AND A COLLAPSED CHURCH THAT WAS UNDER
CONSTRUCTION. THE TEAM ALSO INVESTIGATED MULTIPLE REPORTS OF
DAMAGE ACROSS NORTHWEST INDIANA AND ATTRIBUTED THESE TO STRAIGHT
LINE WINDS LIKELY APPROACHING 100 MPH. THESE DAMAGE REPORTS FOR
INDIANA HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN SHARED AS LOCAL STORM REPORTS.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PERSONNEL SURVEYED DAMAGE IN EASTERN
LEE...SOUTHERN DE KALB...AND KENDALL COUNTIES OF ILLINOIS. THE
SURVEY TEAM DETERMINED THAT MUCH OF WHAT THEY FOUND WAS STRAIGHT
LINE WIND DAMAGE...BUT ONE AREA SOUTH OF SHABBONA IN SOUTHEAST DE
KALB COUNTY WAS CONFIRMED TO BE A TORNADO.
THE MAXIMUM DAMAGE OCCURRED OVER AN APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE LONG
SEGMENT OF THE PATH WHERE THE TORNADO SNAPPED NUMEROUS UTILITY
POLES AND AROUND 80 PERCENT OF THE LARGE HARDWOOD TREES. THIS AREA
COINCIDED WITH THE SOUTHERN END OF SHABBONA LAKE STATE PARK ALONG
SHABBONA GROVE ROAD. ALONG THE REMAINDER OF THE TORNADO PATH THERE
WAS MINOR TREE DAMAGE. MINOR SHINGLE PEELING WAS SEEN AT ONE
LOCATION...BUT FOR THE MOST PART THE TORNADO DID NOT INTERSECT ANY
STRUCTURES.
THIS TORNADO PATH ALSO WAS COINCIDENT WITH A NEARLY MILE-WIDE
SWATH OF LARGE HAIL THAT PRODUCED EXTENSIVE SHREDDING AND SMASHING
OF CROPS.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE WIND DAMAGE IN THIS AREA WILL BE
PROVIDED AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. THE DAMAGE WAS SCATTERED AND
CONSISTENT WITH MAINLY 60-80 MPH WINDS. THIS INCLUDED ABOUT A
HALF DOZEN GRAIN BINS DENTED AND NUMEROUS LARGE TREES DOWNED.

THIS PRELIMINARY INFORMATION WAS DETERMINED BY NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE SURVEY TEAMS AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE PENDING
FINAL REVIEW OF THE EVENT AND PUBLICATION IN NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE STORM DATA.
THIS INFORMATION WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED ON OUR WEBSITE AT

Tree Damage

Tornado damage in Shabbona Lake State Park a few miles south of Shabbona.

Smashed Grass

Smashed tall grass under part of the tornadic circulation.

COOP Equipment

Not much damage, but ironically this is NWS observing equipment in Shabbona Lake State Park which was titled by the winds near the EF-1 tornado.

Hail Damage

Hail damage to crops. The lack of visible crop in the immediate forefront fields help to show that. Note the fields in the distance are more green and full. When examining these crops in the foreground up close, they were shredded and smashed, with no leaves giving this appearance above.

Wind Damage

Wind damage four miles northeast of Plano.

Wind Damage

Wind damage four miles northeast of Plano. This barn door had been blown around 40 yards and had smashed an iron railing on the porch of this house. It had led to the railing being jarred out of the cement block stairs it was in.
