Cold and Frequent Snowfall Thus Far

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL
915 PM CST SUN DEC 15 2013 /1015 PM EST SUN DEC 15 2013/

...COLD AND FREQUENT SNOWFALL THUS FAR...

WHILE YOUNG YET...THIS WINTER HAS CERTAINLY SEEMED COLD AND SNOWY
TO MOST ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO RECENT YEARS. DIGGING INTO THE
NUMBERS SUPPORTED THAT...AT LEAST FOR THE MOST PART.

FOR CHICAGO (OHARE)...

THE 9.3 INCHES OF SNOW OBSERVED THUS FAR IS THE MOST SINCE 2005
WHEN 11.7 INCHES HAD BEEN RECORDED BY THIS POINT. THE NORMAL
THROUGH DECEMBER 15TH IS 5.0 INCHES. THUS FAR...CHICAGO HAS
OBSERVED 14 DAYS WITH AT LEAST A TRACE OF SNOW. THAT IS FAIRLY
CLOSE TO THE NORMAL OF 12 THROUGH THIS POINT. IT IS THE MOST IN
FIVE YEARS SINCE 23 DAYS HAD BEEN OBSERVED SINCE THIS POINT IN
2008.

AS FOR DECEMBER TEMPERATURES DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE
MONTH...THE AVERAGE OF 23.4 DEGREES IS THE 20TH COLDEST THROUGH
THE MIDPOINT OF THE MONTH SINCE 1872. ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO GO THAT
FAR BACK TO HAVE SEEN AN EVEN COLDER FIRST HALF OF DECEMBER...WITH
2010 HAVING AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 20.3 DEGREES.

FOR ROCKFORD...

THE 7.4 INCHES OF SNOW SEEN THUS FAR IS ACTUALLY JUST A LONE HALF
INCH ABOVE NORMAL. WHAT DOES STAND OUT IS THE FREQUENCY OF
SNOWFALL...EVEN IF IT BE MAINLY LIGHT. ROCKFORD HAS SEEN 19 DAYS
WITH AT LEAST A TRACE OF SNOW THUS FAR. THAT IS THE MOST THROUGH
THIS POINT IN FIVE YEARS...SINCE 24 SUCH DAYS HAD BEEN SEEN IN
2008. THERE HAVE BEEN 15 DAYS SINCE NOVEMBER 20TH WITH A TRACE OF
SNOW...OR OVER HALF /58 PERCENT/ OF THE DAYS SINCE THAT POINT!

AS FOR DECEMBER TEMPERATURES DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE
MONTH...THE AVERAGE OF 19.9 DEGREES IS THE 16TH COLDEST THROUGH
THE MID POINT OF THE MONTH SINCE 1906. ONLY BACK THREE YEARS AGO
DID THE MONTH ACTUALLY START COLDER...WITH 2010 HAVING AN AVERAGE
OF 18.3 DEGREES THROUGH THE 15TH.
