Radar upgrade: SAILS

Upgrade to St. Louis Dopper Radar (KLSX): SAILS

The St. Louis WSR-88D received an important upgrade on June 17th, 2014 called SAILS, which stands for Supplemental Adaptive Intra-Volume Low-Level Scan. This upgrade will help radar operators detect rapidly developing low-level rotation, such as occurred with the University City tornado on April 3rd, 2014. SAILS cuts the time between scans for the lowest level by half, from about 4 minutes to about 2 minutes. The following graphics show how SAILS adds an extra scan of the lowest level (0.5 degrees).
