Strong Winds and Warmer Temperatures Take Toll on Lake Michigan Ice (updated 2/24)

The strong winds and warmer temperatures from last week had wiped out much of the ice cover that had been over the near shore and open waters of Lake Michigan between Sheboygan and the Illinois border.  Take a look at the below animation which begins February 11th and includes images from February 19th, 22nd and 23rd.

The last two images from the 22nd and 23rd show that the ice was beginning to reform and thicken over the nearshore and open waters of western Lake Michigan due to the return of the persistent cold.

The below high resolution visible image of northern Lake Michigan from February 22nd showed some interesting ice formations streaming northeast from northern Door County and Green Bay.

Cold, below normal temperatures will persist this week resulting in more ice reforming on Lake Michigan.
