Lake Michigan Over 90% Ice Cover

The unyielding cold weather has caused the ice on Lake Michigan to continue to expand the last several days.  The below high resolution visible satellite image from March 2nd shows widespread ice cover over central Lake Michigan.  A small area of open water remained on the eastern side of the lake, well away from the Michigan shore.

The below high resolution visible satellite image from northern Lake Michigan shows complete ice cover over the far north, east and northeast of Door County.  The amount of snow on the ice and variations in ice thickness gives it a mottled appearance.

The Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) estimated ice cover on Lake Michigan to be just over 90 percent as of March 2nd.  The below graph from GLERL shows the increase in Lake Michigan ice cover from late January into early March.
