2008 Ends on a Wet Note in Southern Wisconsin

A few statistics on snowfall so far this winter as well as some year-end notes.

MILWAUKEE

December snowfall..................35.3 inches..........average 11.2 inches

Season to-date snowfall.........38.3 inches...........average 15.3 inches.

2008 was the second snowiest December in Milwaukee since records began.  The record is 49.5 inches ser back in 2000.

Calendar year snowfall in 2008 was 106.6 inches.  The record is 110.3 inches in 1886.

Yearly precipitation in 2008 was 44.4 inches, which is the 3rd highest in the books.  The record is 50.36 inches in 1876 and 2nd place is 46.15 inches in 1877.

 

MADISON

December snowfall................40.4 inches............average 12.1 inches.

Season to-date snowfall.......44.7 inches............average 17.2 inches.

2008 broke the record for December snowfall.  The old record was 35.0 inches in 2000.  The record for snowfall in any month also fell.  The old record was 37.0 inches in February 1994.

Madison also broke the record for most snow in a calendar year with a total of 111.1 inches.  The previous record was 82.6 inches in 1994.

Yearly precipitation total in 2008 was 44.06 inches which ranks 5th in the books.  The record is 52.91 inches in 1881.
