Summary of the April 25-26, 2009 Heavy Rain Event

After temperatures in the mid to upper 80s on April 24th, a backdoor cold front sagged south and stalled over northern Illinois on Saturday, April 25th and remained in place through late Sunday afternoon, April 26th. Rounds of showers and thunderstorms developed north of this front and tracked across southern Wisconsin, beginning during the late morning hours on Saturday, and continuing through Sunday afternoon, April 26th.

Very heavy rain accompanied some of the storms, resulting in widespread rain totals of 2 to 4 inches during the 48-hour period from 7 am Saturday to 7 am Monday.  Many rivers over the area rose rapidly to near or above flood stage as a result, particularly the Fox, the Rock, the Root River Canal, the Root River, and the Sugar River.
