Seasonal Average Temperature Trends - Milwaukee and Madison

Here is a look at seasonal average temperatures for Milwaukee and Madison beginning in 1870. 

Milwaukee

Below are graphs of the average temperatures for spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), autumn (September, October, November), and winter (December, January, February) in Milwaukee.   

The seasonal average temperature for spring in Milwaukee from 1870-2009 is 44.1 degrees.  The maximum spring average temperature of 50.3 degrees occured in 1991 due to a warm May.  The minimum spring average temperature of 38.7 degrees occured in 1875 due to an abnormally cool March.

 

The seasonal average temperature for summer in Milwaukee from 1870-2008 is 68.6 degrees.  The maximum summer average temperature of 73.8 degrees occured in 1988 and 1995 due to a warm July and August.  The minimum summer average temperature of 64.7 degrees occured in 1885 due to a cool August.

 

The seasonal average temperature for autumn in Milwaukee from 1870-2008 is 50.6 degrees.  The maximum autumn average temperature of 57.8 degrees occured in 1931 due to a warm September.  The minimum autumn average temperature of 45.0 degrees occured in 1875.

 

 

The seasonal average temperature for winter in Milwaukee from 1870-2008 is 23.6 degrees.  The maximum winter average temperature of 32.6 degrees occured in 1932 due to above average temperatures in December, January, and February.  The minimum winter average temperature of 13.7 degrees occured in 1873 due to a frigid January and February.

 

On a whole from 1870 to 2008, there is an upward trend in temperatures during each of the seasons.

 

Madison

Below are graphs of the average temperatures for spring, summer, autumn, and winter in Madison.   

The seasonal average temperature for spring in Madison from 1870-2009 is 45.1 degrees.  The maximum spring average temperature of 52.2 degrees occured in 1977 due to above average temperatures in March, April, and May.  The minimum spring average temperature of 39.3 degrees occured in 1875 due to an abnormally cool March.

 

The seasonal average temperature for summer in Madison from 1870-2008 is 69.7 degrees.  The maximum summer average temperature of 74.6 degrees occured in 1995 due to a very warm June and August.  The minimum summer average temperature of 64.5 degrees occured in 1915 due to a cool June, July, and August.

 

The seasonal average temperature for autumn in Milwaukee from 1870-2008 is 49.1 degrees.  The maximum autumn average temperature of 56.0 degrees occured in 1931 due to a warm September.  The minimum autumn average temperature of 43.3 degrees occured in 1893 due to a cold November. 

 

The seasonal average temperature for winter in Madison from 1870-2008 is 20.5 degrees.  The maximum winter average temperature of 31.8 degrees occured in 1878 due to above average temperatures in December, January, and February.  The minimum winter average temperature of 9.7 degrees occured in 1873 due to a frigid January and February where the average temperature was below 4 degrees.

 

On a whole from 1870 to 2008, there is an upward trend in temperatures during spring and winter.  The trend in average temperatures for autumn remained nearly constant and there was a downward trend in temperatures during the summer.
