July 2011 Top 10 Warmest July For Milwaukee And Madison

(Corrected 9:34am Monday, August 1:  Madison actually recorded its 7th highest July on record, considering that three months are tied for 3rd.)

July 2011 was one of the top ten warmest July months on record at Milwaukee and Madison.  Milwaukee set its 4th warmest July on record in July 2011, with an average temperature of 76.4 degrees.  This was 4.4 degrees above the normal average temperature of 72.0 degrees.  Madison set its 7th warmest July on record in July 2011, with an average temperature of 76.6 degrees.  This was 5.0 degrees above the normal average temperature of 71.6 degrees.

An extended heat wave all across southern Wisconsin during the middle to late part of the month helped raise the average temperature up to historic levels.  In particular, unusually warm overnight temperatures, in the mid to upper 70s, produced higher daily average temperatures, which had a significant impact on the monthly average.  These warm overnight temperatures can be partially attributed to the exceptionally high humidity levels we experienced during the heat wave.

Here are daily high, low, and average temperatures from Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.  The "summary" at the end of the table shows the average of the daily highs and lows, plus the average of those daily averages, which we use as the monthly average:
