New 1981-2010 Climate Normals In NWS Products

The new 1981-2010 climate normals, which were released on July 1, 2011, were added into National Weather Service climate products on August 1, 2011. All climate products for Milwaukee and Madison now reflect the new normals from 1981-2010.

This includes:

1) Daily Climate Reports (issued four times each day - Milwaukee, Madison),

2) Monthly Climate Reports (issued on the first day of the following month - Milwaukee, Madison),

3) Seasonal Climate Reports (issued on the first day of the following three month meteorological season), and

4) Annual Climate Reports (issued on the first day of the following calendar year).


The following tables show how some of the 1981-2010 monthly normals have changed, compared to the 1971-2000 normals, for Milwaukee and Madison:

Generally speaking, the average maximum temperatures decreased slightly. However, the average minimum temperatures and the average temperatures increased. The average minimum temperatures increased every month, as well as the yearly average. May and June showed an increase in average precipitation, though the yearly average was slightly decreased. Average snowfall showed a decrease in every month, as well as in the yearly average (5.5 inches lower than the 1971-2000 normals).

Generally speaking, the average maximum temperatures, average temperatures and average minimum temperatures all increased. The average precipitation showed a big increase, 1.53 inches higher than the 1971-2000 normals. The yearly average snowfall actually increased slightly, though there were some months that showed a decrease.
