Warm Temperatures/Snow Melt In Southern Wisconsin (Updated 730 pm 1/11)

Southwesterly winds ahead of an approaching low pressure system will allow temperatures to linger in the lower 40s to lower 50s across the area for the majority of the night. However, a strong cold front associated with the low pressure system will cross the area late tonight into Saturday morning and bring more seasonable temperatures back to the region.

High temperatures Saturday will occur in the morning hours and will range from about the mid 30s near Lone Rock to the upper 40s near Racine and Kenosha. By 3 pm Saturday, the temperatures will have dropped into the upper 20s in Lone Rock, the Dells, and Mineral Point and around 40 in Racine and Kenosha. Temperatures will continue to drop Saturday night.  Note how much cooler forecasted high temperatures are on Sunday, in the wake of the cold front.

The combination of recent rainfall and rapid snow melt could cause some localized flooding problems across southern Wisconsin.  Many of the larger rivers are running at historically low levels, so widespread flooding is not expected.  Some ice jams are possible in some rivers, as ice may have broken up as a result of the warmer temperatures and increased flow.  Urban areas with lots of snow are prone to localized flooding, as some storm drains may be blocked by ice and snow.

Here is the latest information on the snow pack across the western Great Lakes. This image does not yet reflect the 1 or 2 inches that melted during the day on Friday as a result of the unseasonably warm temperatures and rainfall.
