Mix Of Freezing Rain, Snow, and Sleet Today and Tonight (Updated 5 AM)

Snow and sleet will develop late this morning and early this afternoon, with precipitation transitioning to freezing rain during the afternoon and evening. Ice accumulations will reach up to 0.20 inches but under 0.10 inches in far southeast Wisconsin near Lake Michigan, where temperatures will be milder. Snow accumulations will range from 0.5 inches near the Illinois border to around 2 inches toward Central Wisconsin.

Low pressure, and with it a surge of warm air and increasing moisture, will bring the mixed precipitation to southern Wisconsin while surface temperatures remain below freezing. South winds will eventually bring above freezing temperatures from south to north across the region tonight. The precipitation should begin as a mix of snow and sleet, then mix with, and change to freezing rain. It should change to all light rain as the precipitation diminishes overnight into early Monday morning. Light rain, fog, and drizzle are expected for Monday. See our Winter Weather Advisory for more information.

Weather Graphic Today/Tonight

The potential exists for 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet in far northern portions of the area this afternoon and tonight, with less than an inch to the south. In addition, ice accumulations up to 0.20 inches are possible during this time. This will lead to hazardous driving conditions and will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery road and limited visibilities -- so use caution while driving!  The image below shows the timing for the weather expected today (click the image for a larger version).
