Rainfall Totals for June 21-22

Scattered thunderstorms Friday evening evolved into a line of thunderstorms oriented west to east through southern Wisconsin early Saturday morning.  The line in southeast Wisconsin gradually moved southward, but the line remained stationary over south central Wisconsin for several hours.  The image below shows the radar-estimated rainfall total for this thunderstorm event from 730 pm Friday, June 21st through 1 pm Saturday, June 22nd.  The pink and purple colors represent estimated rainfall amounts of 6 to 10 inches.  Actual reports ranged from 4 to 8 inches, so there was probably a slight over-estimation by the radar.  Most of Iowa County, northeast Lafayette County, northwest Green County, and far southwest Dane County were impacted by the heavy rain.  A sinkhole developed in downtown Mineral Point, and many roads in the hardest-hit areas had portions under standing or flowing water and some were even washed out. There were even a few trees down due to the soft ground.

MKX radar estimated precip

Recall that a line of strong thunderstorms rolled eastward across southern Wisconsin on Friday morning.  Most of the rain fell after 7 am Friday.  The network of volunteer cooperative observers across the state mainly report 24-hour rainfall amounts at 7 am each day.  Therefore, observations received through 7 am Saturday morning included both thunderstorm events.

The image below is a graphical depiction of actual rainfall measurements smoothed with modeled precipitation amounts.  Click on each image for a larger view.  The 24-hour rainfall reports are listed below.
