July 21-22 Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain

Numerous showers and thunderstorms moved across south central and southeast Wisconsin yesterday starting around 1 PM and lasted until the evening.  In the early afternoon, showers and thunderstorms developed and generally moved from the NW to SE across southern and central Wisconsin. The main focus area of the showers and thunderstorms moved along a line from the Wisconsin Dells-Lone Rock to Stoughton-Lake Ripley to Racine-Kenosha. Reports of 1.5 inches and higher (up to 4 inches) were commonly reported along this swath.

Although a few strong wind and hail reports were received, heavy rain was the predominant threat. 24-hour rainfall and local storm reports showed that some places received locally heavy downpours, with the highest reports standing at 4.02 and 3.83 inches from 1 N and 1 SW of Palmyra, respectively.

Below is a radar image at 344 pm CDT showing the 1st round of thunderstorms with heavy rain over southeast Jefferson County, and the upstream 2nd round. Ultimately, there was a 3rd and 4th rounds which led to the 4.02 inches just north of Palmyra.  The image on the right is a multi-sensor rainfall graphic of the Sunday afternoon and evening raiinfall, similar to those above, but with a diffrent contour scheme.  Click on images for larger versions.
