Next Generation of Our AWIPS Being Installed Today

NWS Green Bay will be backing up our office for all forecasts and warning operations today as we get a new version of our AWIPS operating system installed.

What is AWIPS?

AWIPS stands for Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System.  It is our main computer system for viewing weather data, issuing watches, warnings, advisories and for composing forecasts.   Today we are getting AWIPS II installed.

The bulk of the improvements with AWIPS II are with the "background" supporting architecture within which our weather visualization programs run.  The front end programs will look very similar to the original AWIPS system.   However, AWIPS II still brings huge improvements to how we'll be able to view weather data...from satellite imagery to computer simulations, to radar and weather observations. See the images below for an idea of what AWIPS I and II look like. Click each image for a larger version.
