Cold December At Milwaukee And Madison (Updated 5 am Dec 26)

Milwaukee:

After experiencing a couple of very warm Decembers in Milwaukee for 2011 and 2012 (about 7 degrees above normal both years), we are trying to balance things out in 2013 with readings so far about 6 degrees below normal.  This includes official observations at Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport reaching Zero F or less 5 times so far this December.  That is the most since December 2000, when we hit that mark 9 times.  Before this year, we had only hit zero or below in 3 Decembers, beginning in 2001.  This was also the first time since 2008.

We hit Zero F or below 3 times in December 2008, 1 time in 2005 and 1 time in 2004.

We could possibly have 3 more below zero readings this month in Milwaukee, if current forecasts a week out hold true.

We have also exceeded the normal monthly average of snow at Milwaukee, with about 18 inches so far this month.
