Temperatures have remained well below normal across southern Wisconsin and Lake Michigan since December 30th. This cold spell has allowed more areas of ice to form in the colder, shallower near shore waters of Lake Michigan. The below high resolution visible satellite image from January 2nd shows considerable ice cover from Sheboygan south to Port Washington.
Clouds obscured the near shore waters farther south in Milwaukee, Wind Point and Kenosha. The strong south to southwest winds expected today and tonight will likely cause the ice to thin and break up.
Also, a small portion of Green Lake remains ice free.
