Recap of the June 21, 2013 Evening Severe Weather Episode

 Event Overview

During the evening of June 21, 2013, a line of thunderstorms developed across South Dakota and tracked eastward into central and southern Minnesota.  The atmosphere was favorable for this line to maintain its intensity with very unstable conditions located to the south and strong winds aloft to push it along.  The unstable conditions enhanced the potential for some of the stronger winds aloft to reach the surface, leading to a widespread damaging wind event. Wet soil left from previous heavy rains allowed trees to become uprooted more easily.  At one point, just over a half million people were without power in the Twin Cities Metro area.  In addition to the wind, torrential rainfall accompanied the line with over two inches being reported in some places resulting in flash flooding.
