Upper Michigan...Colder than Alaska (at least temporarily)

A very amplified weather pattern has allowed arctic air to encompass the Great Lakes region while much warmer air has surged northward to Alaska. The highest minimum temperature across Upper Michigan on 2/23 was -6F at Grand Marais. This temperature was equivalent to the coldest temperature across the entire state of Alaska. In other words, all of Upper Michigan was at least as cold as all of Alaska. The -36F recorded in Clarksburg (6 miles east of Champion) was the coldest temperature in the entire United States for 2/23.
