Another Very Warm September Across Upper Michigan

AFTER FOUR MONTHS IN A ROW OF COOL WEATHER IN THE GREAT LAKES...THE
WEATHER PATTERN MADE AN ABRUPT CHANGE IN SEPTEMBER. AN UPPER RIDGE
BUILT OVER THE GREAT LAKES EARLY IN THE MONTH AND THEN PERSISTED
ALMOST TO THE END OF SEPTEMBER...PUSHING THE MEAN MONTHLY
TEMPERATURE AT MOST PLACES TO 4 TO 6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE MONTH
TURNED OUT SO WARM THE MEAN SEPTEMBER TEMPERATURE WAS JUST 1 TO 3
DEGREES LOWER THAN THE AVERAGE AUGUST TEMPERATURE EVEN THOUGH THE
TYPICAL AUGUST AVERAGES 8 TO 9 DEGREES WARMER THAN SEPTEMBER. IN
FACT...SEPTEMBER 2009 NOW RANKS AS ONE OF THE TOP TEN WARMEST NINTH
MONTHS ON RECORD AT MANY PLACES. AT THE MARQUETTE NWS...THE MEAN
DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS ABOVE NORMAL ON ALL BUT 7 DAYS IN THE MONTH.

WARM SEPTEMBERS HAVE BEEN THE NORM IN RECENT YEARS. SINCE 1995...
ONLY SEPTEMBER 2006 HAS BEEN COOLER THAN NORMAL AT MOST LOCATIONS.

THE FOLLOWING TABLE SUMMARIES THE ANOMALOUS SEPTEMBER 2009 WARMTH AND
COMPARES THIS SEPTEMBER MEAN TEMPERATURE WITH THE WARMEST NINTH MONTH
